L217 Operations
CSX U217-16 clears Franklin Curve just east of Williamsburg, Virginia, at 12:59 P.M. on Sunday, December 17th, 2023. A rare daylight weekend run of L217, this photo was taken when L217 ran straight to Newport News, Virginia, without working Busch Yard in Grove, Virginia. Note the first few boxcars in the consist, these are bound for Crossglobe Ltd. in Newport News and are filled with paper products bound for export to China. This L217 fits the bill for what would typically be seen on this train.

CSX L217 "The Peninsula Express"
CSX Transportation's Peninsula Subdivision road local L217 has long been one of the more interesting trains to observe on this stretch of line. Running from the large flat classification yard in Richmond known as "Acca Yard" to the medium sized Newport News timed freight yard, this train has remained relatively consistent since PSR was implemented during the E. Hunter Harrison years. Today, L217 no longer runs daily as it did three years ago but it can still consistently be seen three or four times a week running east of Richmond, usually around midnight. L217 allows local businesses the ability to conduct logistical operations economically as well as environmentally and is instrumental in the continual growth of industry on the Peninsula.
Current Operations of L217:
Unlike in years past, L217 no longer runs everyday. Officially, it operates "as needed" but realistically runs approximately three to four times a week.
L217 originates at CSX's Acca Yard in Richmond, Virginia, and terminates at CSX's Newport News Yard. The train also occasionally works Busch Yard east of Williamsburg.
L217 has a westbound counterpart L216 which runs from Newport News to Acca Yard. L216 also occasionally works Busch Yard.
Both trains consistently run under U217 or U216 symbols but not always. CSX can't make their mind up when organizing these trains.
Both road locals unfortunately consistently run at night, specifically around midnight. This makes seeing them difficult.
Here is the total consist of the U217-16 pictured. Unfortunately, this source does not detail the waybill of each car but some information on car destinations is available. All cars designated "IARX" or "TBOX" are destined for Crossglobe Ltd. in Newport News. The "GGPX" cars are bad ordered and destined for the CSX car repair shops in Newport News. The singular "UP" car is for Anheuser-Busch Companies LLC. These are just some examples of the businesses that rely on L217 to maintain production.
