Production Rosters

With the increasing demand for Internal Combustion powered locomotives and the decline of steam locomotive sales, companies that primary constructed and sold steam locomotives like the Baldwin Locomotive Works, and the American Locomotive Works were losing railroad customers to new corporations like the Electro-Motive-Corporation, and General Electric which only constructed diesels. Although both companies would later begin selling diesel locomotives, GE and EMD had already acquired a firm reputation as the leading developpers of diesel locomotive technology. Even so, both Baldwin and Alco survived for a few more decades until both went bankrupt and were liquidated in the 1960's. The diesel market really began taking off in the postwar era when oil prices were low and the efficiency of pioneer diesel locomotives such as the Electro-Motive-Division's GP7 (GP stands for General Purpose) were demonstrated all across America. Today's diesel market is made up of EMD (Now owned by Caterpillar), General Electric (Owned by Wabtec), and many smaller diesel rebuilders and leasers such as Larry's Truck & Electric (LTEX), and General American Transportation Company (GATX). This page will contain links to individual pages summarizing the history of each individual diesel model organized by builder and most importantly, the all time production roster including builder date, builder number, ect...
